Although it is preferred that you have a headboard on your bed on the other hand it doesn't have to be a piece of metal or wood everytime. Granted that you need to back yourself with comfort but who sits up on the bed 24/7.Even if you do, you always have pillows for that extra softness and support you need to give your spine after a long day at work.
The designer is in you...think of creative ideas.The only thing you need to make the bed look complete is a back and a back can be anything.It can be as small as a bolster or can extend upto the ceiling.

Get some old photo frames that you have tossed in a deserted corner of your room and upholster them with any kind of discarded clothes you have using a staple gun.You can add in an extra layer of foam to pad it up. There are several videos & illustrations on how to upholster on the Internet.Hang the photo frames in a straight line or randomly just about at eye level while sitting on the bed so that your head rests on the frames while sitting. Load the bed's headside with lots of pillows,bolsters and accent pillows & wallah you have a gorgeous bed completely customized by you!
